[Falkirk, 21.04.2026] Falkirk MP Euan Stainbank has welcomed a package of UK Government measures aimed at tackling the UK’s reliance on volatile gas prices and accelerating the transition to a more secure, affordable, and sustainable energy system.

The announcements include new policies to allow for the full exploitation of existing oil and gas fields through tie-backs, as well as the removal of barriers to renewable energy deployment. They also propose further taxation of profits from electricity price rises directly linked to the price of gas, in order to fund anticipated additional support for consumers.

Mr Stainbank said:

“We must break the link between electricity prices and volatile gas markets once and for all. Families and businesses are currently subject to fossil fuel price shocks due to this link.

“These reforms are a step in the right direction. Accelerating renewable energy projects, allowing for the full exploitation of existing fields, and incentivising projects that break the link to gas.

“It is also right that excess profits made as a result of the price shock are used to fund anticipated support for households with the cost of living.

“The cut of £150 to Tory-era green levies on everyone’s energy bills, which has allowed energy costs to reduce for households, is welcome, and further anticipated support must continue to be targeted towards working people.

“We need a balanced approach — supporting existing energy production where appropriate, while rapidly scaling up clean, homegrown energy that can deliver lower bills in the long term.

“Breaking our dependence on gas-linked pricing is essential if we are to deliver a fairer, more resilient energy system for communities like Falkirk.”

Mr Stainbank added that continued investment in grid infrastructure and renewable capacity would be key to ensuring that the benefits of these reforms are felt by households and businesses as quickly as possible.
