[Falkirk, 18.09.2026] Pupils from Falkirk High were crowned winners of the Falkirk Schools Debating Challenge 2026 as pupils came together at Larbert High School on Friday 18 September to put their ideas, arguments and public speaking skills to the test.
The competition, organised by Falkirk MP Euan Stainbank and Falkirk Council, with support from local partners, Lidl and UNISON, gave young people the opportunity to develop persuasive arguments, respond to opposing views and explore the role of informed discussion in democracy.
Participants were challenged to look beyond the headlines, weigh up evidence and think on their feet. Alongside the competitive element, the event celebrated the preparation, teamwork and careful listening that make a good debate.
Mr Stainbank said:
“Congratulations to Falkirk High on their well-deserved win, and to every pupil who took part. Standing up to make your case and answer challenging questions takes courage, and everyone involved should be proud of their contribution.
“This challenge was about helping young people recognise that their voices matter. Researching an argument, listening to another perspective and disagreeing respectfully are skills they can take into further study, work and everyday life.
“Thank you to Larbert High School for hosting, to Falkirk Council and our partners for helping to bring the event together, and to the teachers and staff who supported pupils with their preparation. I hope everyone who took part leaves with greater confidence to speak up and get involved”.

“Preparing for a debate encourages young people to explore a subject in depth, question assumptions and consider views different from their own. Those habits help them become more confident, independent learners.
“Thank you to the teachers and staff who supported the pupils throughout their preparation. Events like this celebrate that effort and give young people a platform to find their voice”.
